Popkin's History of Scepticism, first published in 1960 and now appearing in a third, revised and expanded, edition, has long since won the status of a "standard work," at once the starting-point for further historical research and an instigation to philosophical reflection on the sceptical tendencies apparently inseparable from the advent of modern thought. The two earlier editions have already been amply celebrated and criticized. The new edition includes a revised treatment of "The Revival of Greek Scepticism in the Sixteenth (...) Century", based in part on C. B. Schmitt's research in his book Cicero Academicus and in later studies. Two new chapters have been added: "Isaac La Peyrère and the Beginnings of Religious Scepticism". embodying Popkin's many recent and continuing studies of La Peyrère and other figures in the seventeenth century pre-Adamite and Marrano movements and "Spinoza's Scepticism and Anti-Scepticism". These new chapters continue to be written in a clear and vivid style, combining narrative with analysis so as to engage both the specialist and the neophyte. (shrink)

Depuis une vingtaine d'annees, on assiste un peu partout a un regain d'interet pour les ecrits socratiques de Xenophon. Que Xenophon ne nous donne pas davantage que Platon un portrait historiquement fiable de Socrate peut etre considere comme un acquis de la critique du XXe siecle. Laissant transparaitre dans son temoignage des options profondement differentes de celles de Platon, Xenophon temoigne par la meme, cependant, des tensions, voire des oppositions qui traversaient le milieu socratique autour du souvenir et de la (...) comprehension de la personne de Socrate: cette seule consideration suffit a faire de Xenophon une source essentielle pour notre connaissance de l'immediat apres Socrate et, par dela, pour notre intelligence de l'histoire de la reception de Socrate dans les siecles ulterieurs. Le colloque dont sont issues les etudes rassemblees dans ce volume, organise a l'Universite de Provence (Aix-Marseille I) du 6 au 9 novembre 2003, s'inscrit dans cette perspective. Plus qu'un bilan de la nouvelle orientation des etudes xenophontiennes, qu'il est encore trop tot pour etablir, on y verra l'illustration de la diversite d'approches dont est susceptible le temoignage de Xenophon sur Socrate. Due a Louis-Andre Dorion, une bibliographie des etudes sur les ecrits socratiques de Xenophon publiees dans le dernier quart de siecle temoigne de la vitalite retrouvee de ce domaine de recherche. The informed consent process is the legal embodiment of the fundamental right of the individual to make decisions affecting his or her health., and the patient’s permission is a crucial form of respect of freedom and dignity, it becomes extremely important to enhance the patient’s understanding and recall of the information given by the physician. This statement acquires additional weight when the medical treatment proposed can potentially be detrimental or even fatal. This is the case of thalassemia patients pertaining to (...) class 3 of the Pesaro classification where Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation remains the only potentially curative treatment. Unfortunately, this kind of intervention is burdened by an elevated transplantation-related mortality risk , equal to 30% according to published reports. In thalassemia, the role of the patient in the informed consent process leading up to HSCT has not been fully investigated. This study investigated the hypothesis that information provided by physicians in the medical scenario of HSCT is not fully understood by patients and that misunderstanding and communication biases may affect the clinical decision-making process. Contrary to what might be expected given a religious or other motivation, Pierre Duhem's interest in mediaeval science was the result of his surprise encounter with Jordanus de Nemore while working on Les origines de la statique in the late autumn of 1903. Historical assumptions common among physicists at that time may explain this surprise, which occasioned a frantic search for more mediaeval precursors for Renaissance mechanics. Maurice Blondel is well known as the philosopher of Action. His work is too vast and too rich however to be confined within such a category. In fact, it Contains a real metaphysics of being, as this book of Dr. École’s shows quite clearly.

A fine introduction to Rensi's work in general, since the development of his ethical thought is presented in relation to the rest of his philosophy. The author also traces its connections to Kant, Spinoza, and other modern philosophers. The work is more expository than critical; contains an extensive bibliography on Rensi.--R. D. G.

Beginning from a psychological point of view, the author moves into a strictly phenomenological study of the organization of perception and of consciousness. His thesis is that every field of consciousness has three domains, viz., a theme, a field or background, and a fringe area, each of which has its own type of organization. The work breaks some new ground in phenomenology and contains a sketch of the ontological implications of the study.--R. D. G.

The focus of this study was to analyze the content, distribution, and comparative genome relationships of 996 chromosome bin-mapped expressed sequence tags accounting for 2266 restriction fragments on the homoeologous group 3 chromosomes of hexaploid wheat. Of these loci, 634, 884, and 748 were mapped on chromosomes 3A, 3B, and 3D, respectively. The individual chromosome bin maps revealed bins with a high density of mapped ESTs in the distal region and bins of low density in the proximal region of the (...) chromosome arms, with the exception of 3DS and 3DL. These distributions were more localized on the higher-resolution group 3 consensus map with intermediate regions of high-mapped-EST density on both chromosome arms. Gene ontology classification of mapped ESTs was not significantly different for homoeologous group 3 chromosomes compared to the other groups. A combined analysis of the individual bin maps using 537 of the mapped ESTs revealed rearrangements between the group 3 chromosomes. Approximately 232 of the consensus mapped ESTs matched sequences on rice chromosome 1 and revealed large- and small-scale differences in gene order. Of the group 3 mapped EST unigenes ∼21 and 32% matched the Arabidopsis coding regions and proteins, respectively, but no chromosome-level gene order conservation was detected. (shrink)
